I have heard that a different orrifice must be used to go from natural gas to propane. any websites related to this issue would be helpful

have a new vent free propane heater and when i hook a older 100 lbs tank to it I smell gas when I hook a new 30 lbs. tank to it works perfect. Could I have moisture in the tank or a bad regulatar. Fittings are all secure checked them time and again, If it’s moisture what can be done about it. Tank has been preasure tested and passed

I’m not quite sure what you mean by “freezing the heater”…
If you run the heater with the propane cylinder lying on it’s side, you could see frost on the hose and the gas valve assembly. This is because you are putting liquid propane to the heater instead of vapor. This can be VERY dangerous and should not be done. The cylinder must always be upright.
The only other thing I can think of is sometimes if the burner is too large for the size of cylinder it is connected to, the cylinder itself can frost or freeze up, but not usually the heater.
30,000btu is a pretty light load. Unless you get down into very low temperatures ( -15°F or -25°C ) a 20# cylinder should feed it fine.
EDIT: If the heater is shutting down, it is not because of the cylinder. A 20# cylinder has more than enough capacity to feed a 30k btu heater. It sounds more like you may have a problem with the 100% safety valve. The thermocouple is a short piece of thin tubing that runs from the gas valve to the burner pilot. Make sure it is threaded in tight at the gas valve, and the tip of it is right in the flame of the pilot. If it doesn’t sense the flame properly, the gasvalve will stop the flow of propane. You may possibly need to replace the thermocouple…they do go bad from time to time.

I live in mass. so i’m wondering how far this propane is really going to last me. I will use it just on weekends to heat the pool. I have the heater already without the propane and wondering if 2.70 a gallon is worth it or not.

I am a home improvement contractor and I was told be a customer that there is an electric tankless water heater with a propane back up. I have never heard of such, nor can I find one online. If you know of one would you please paste a link for me.

Is it likely to last a couple of weeks if only a few nights of frosts?

I was unable to pay my pg&e bill and they shut off my gas. I’m not thinking of trying to use propane in place of natural gas for all of my gas appliances or anything. And I would only turn the propane on when I needed hot water for a shower or something and then I’d shut it off. It would only be occasionally if it is able to work.
