When I try to light the pilot I have to blow on the flame before I can get it to stay on. Then when I try to turn on the heater the Burner will light for a short time then cut off….but if I blow on the burner while it is lit it will stay on.

We have a vented wall mounted propane heater in the the basement for emergency winter use only. We have noticed that the pilot light burns a significant amount of propane during the summer months. Is it safe for me to turn off the pilot now and then back on later in the fall?
